General Hospital Headwriters Tease a ‘Volatile and Sexy’ Port Charles: Why Even ‘Ludicrous’ Ideas Are Key to the Drama

One day it’s Holly breaking up Sasha and Cody by revealing that they’re cousins, the next it’s Brook Lynn admitting out of nowhere that she gave a baby up for adoption just long ago enough for him to have grown up to be Gio. Yup, there is virtually no predicting what you’ll get when you tune into General Hospital — and that’s by design. The version of the soap that headwriters Michelle Korte and Chris Van Etten want to put on the air, they tell TV Insider, is “volatile and sexy.”
“Volatile,” we’ll buy; did anyone have Cyrus turning into some kind of twisted mercy killer on their 2024-25 bingo list? But “sexy”? Not sure about that one, not with the only couple getting it on seeming to be Willow and Drew (and nobody wants to see that).
Elsewhere in the Q&A, the scribes discuss the importance of maintaining a writers’ room in which no suggestion is too off the wall to make. “We keep the atmosphere safe for voicing any idea, even the ludicrous ones,” they say. “Sometimes when we rein it in, the ludicrous idea is the most exciting one.”
When the tag team disagrees, they talk it out until they’ve found a compromise that works for the characters. They “never feel handled” by one another, they add.
