The residents of Days of Our Lives’ Salem will sleep a little easier tonight: In the December 11 episode of the Peacock soap (recapped here), the nefarious Clyde Weston was shot by Catherina Green and slipped into a coma.

“It’s been a fabulous run so far,” portrayer James Read tells our sister site Deadline. “Only the soap gods know if it is meant to continue!

“I always think of Days as a family,” adds the veteran actor, “and have enjoyed every minute of working there since I started 10 years ago.”

Given that Clyde wasn’t killed — and Days of Our Lives regularly resurrects the dead, anyway — it’s a safe bet that he’ll be back to stir up trouble down the road.

Clyde's mouth droops and he slumps back in a desk chair. Blood pools on his shirt at his chest. Chad leans over the desk.

Before moving to Salem as Ben and Jordan’s bad-news dad, Read was already a familiar face in primetime, where he guest-starred on everything from Hotel to Home Improvement, appeared in TV miniseries such as Robert Kennedy and His Times and North and South (and its sequel) and was a regular during Season 1 of Remington Steele.

During a break from Days of Our Lives, Read originated the role of Gregory Chase on General Hospital. When he was unavailable for a return to Port Charles, Trapper John M.D. alum Gregory Harrison took over as Finn and Chase’s dad, playing the part until the character’s demise earlier this year. (And yes, Read also guest-starred on Trapper John — dude’s done ’em all!)
